NYC DOE has a new summer program called Summer Academy! They have different programs within that for students of different ages (K – 12). Please check it out. In addition, S-PREP Returner form is Due April 1st! If you haven’t solidified your summer plans, I highly encourage you to return for our S-PREP Summer Program! Even if you are waiting for other opportunities to get back to you, still submit your S-PREP returner form so that you don’t lose an opportunity this summer.

Summer Academy Programs

The First and Second Grade Summer Academy

The First and Second Grade Summer Academy is for students who want to explore and create this summer. Students will learn through play and engaging lessons, giving them a jumpstart on the next grade.

  • Student Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in first and second grade
  • Dates and Times:  July 2 – August 8, 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Location: Programs are located in every district across the city
  • How to Apply: Contact your school’s Principal or Parent Coordinator to request a seat

 

Multilingual Learners Summer Academy

The Multilingual Learners Summer Academy is a great way for students to strengthen their academic skills through fun and engaging lessons. Students will participate in hands-on activities designed to support their language skills and prepare them to excel in the next grade. Additional programs are available for students enrolled in Spanish and Mandarin bilingual classes during the school year.

  • Student Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in first – eighth grade
  • Dates and Times:  July 2 – August 8, 8:30 AM  – 2:30 PM
  • How to Apply: Contact your school’s Principal or Parent Coordinator to request a seat
  • Location: Programs are located in every borough across the city

Community Schools Elementary Summer Academy

The Community Schools Elementary Summer Academy is for students who want to play, learn, and explore during the summer. Students attending participating Community Schools can enroll in the full-day program, which includes hands-on STEM projects, art, games, and team building activities led by school and CBO staff.

  • Student Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in grades K-5 at participating Community Schools
  • Dates and Times: July 2 – August 8, 8:30AM – 6PM (program times can vary by school)

STEM Summer in the City

STEM Summer in the City is a five-week program for students who love to create and want to learn more about STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering, and math. Students will spend the summer programming robots, inventing engineering solutions and developing their computer coding and game design skills. The program also includes academic enrichment, art, and recreation. 

  • Student Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in second – tenth grade

STEM Matters

STEM Matters NYC offers students in grades K-11 programs that range from aerospace to animal science, marine biology to mechanics, and ecology to engineering. Students can participate in week-long camps, high school internships, and a four-week course that counts toward college credit.

Community Schools Sixth Grade Summer Academy

The Community Schools Sixth Grade Summer Academy provides students a jumpstart on a successful year at their new middle school. Students will spend time getting to know their new school, teachers and classmates, while participating in project-based learning, team-building, academic support and recreation. 

  • Student eligibility: students starting 6th grade this fall at participating schools.
  • Dates and times: varies by school.

CareerCLUE

CareerCLUE provides high school students the chance to gain valuable work experience and get paid during the summer. Students enrolled in the program will receive a Summer Youth Employment Program summer stipend of up to $700 and can also earn an elective credit. Students will visit some of NYC’s leading employers to learn about different careers and also participate in hands-on science, engineering, and art projects throughout the summer.

  • Student eligibility: Students must be 14- or 15-years-old by July 1, 2019 and attend a participating community school

DREAM

DREAM’s Specialized High School Institute helps prepare eligible middle school students for the Specialized High School Admissions Test.

DYCD Summer Camps:

The DOE’s Office of Community Schools and the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) are collaborating to provide extended summer school opportunities to mandated elementary-school students in select Summer School locations where DYCD has existing COMPASS Programs. This initiative will ensure that more students are able to take advantage of the DOE's Summer-in-the-City programming by providing a longer day and meeting the childcare needs of working parents. It will also allow students to receive a more enriching summer learning experience with arts, field trips, cultural exploration, sports, leadership development and team building.

Middle School JumpSTART

Community Schools will offer at select middle schools a transition program for incoming 6th grade students during the summer. The transition period between elementary and middle schools is a major accomplishment for students and can also be a stressful experience. The JumpSTART program will support schools in being proactive about this exciting transition period to support student development and success.

  • Program Dates & Time: Monday-Friday, 8 hours a day for at least 2 weeks within July 2-August 8

Vulnerable Youth Summer Youth Employment Program (VY SYEP)

There are 3,100 slots available for GUARANTEED summer job placement for all students who are:

  • Homeless, in the NYC shelter system, or in other temporary housing
  • Justice‐involved youth
  • Youth in foster care or receiving preventive services through ACS

 

 

CareerCLUE Program:

CareerClue allows students to get valuable work experience, a $700 stipend and an elective credit. The program includes field trips to learn about different career pathways. Applicants must:

  • Attend a select Community School or CTE School
  • For 14-15 year olds (Be at least 14 years old by July 1, 2019)
  • Speak with their principal or guidance staff in order to apply

School-Based Summer Youth Employment Program:

The DOE, in partnership with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), will provide up to 20,000 paid summer internship and employment placements for youths who are 14–21 years-old, for six weeks during July and August of 2019 via the School-Based option of the Summer Youth Employment Program.
